How the travel fee works

It is distance, and nothing else. Not the phone, not the repair, not what you look like you can afford. Five bands, published below, set by how far you are from central Scranton.

Under 5 miles$15
5 to 12 miles$25
12 to 20 miles$35
20 to 35 miles$45
35 to 55 miles$50 — the ceiling

It is charged once per visit, never per phone. Two phones at the same address, three phones in the same house, a handful at one workplace — the travel gets paid once. At distance that is the difference between an expensive call-out and a sensible one.

And because the fee stops climbing at $50, the further out you are, the less you pay per mile. Five miles out works out at about $1.50 a mile of driving. Fifty-five miles out works out at about 45 cents. That is arithmetic you can check, and it runs in your favor, not mine.

Diagnosis is free at every distance. If a repair is not worth doing, you will hear that — and I would rather say it on the phone before I set off than after I have arrived.

Every town, by band

Distances are road miles measured from central Scranton, so treat them as the shape of the map rather than a quote. Find your town below, then pick that band in the booking tool. It shows you the total before you commit to anything.

The counties, in full

Every municipality inside the radius is covered, whether or not it is named above. The six counties are Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Wyoming, Susquehanna and Monroe, plus the western edge of Pike around Lake Wallenpaupack.

County lines make no difference to the fee. Distance is the only thing that sets the price, which matters on the boundaries — in Forest City, where three counties meet within a mile of Main Street, or around the lake, where the shore is split between two.

If your town is not written down anywhere on this page and you are inside 55 miles, the answer is still yes. The list names the places people search for; it is not the edge of where I go.

What does not change with distance

The repair prices are the same everywhere. A screen from $125 in Scranton is a screen from $125 in Montrose — the travel is the only line that moves, and it is published above rather than worked out after I have seen your house.

So is the warranty: lifetime on screens, three months on batteries and charging port replacements. And so is the free diagnosis, which is the part that actually matters at 46 miles, because it is the reason I can afford to tell you a repair is not worth doing.

The one thing that does change is timing. If I have the part in stock I come the same day; if not, it arrives next day (three days over a weekend) and I come once it lands. Past about 35 miles it is often “yes, and here is the next day I am heading that way” — so if you are not in a hurry, say so when you book. It usually works out better for both of us.

Questions, answered

How far will you travel for a phone repair?

Up to 55 miles from Scranton, which covers Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Wyoming, Susquehanna and Monroe Counties. Travel is charged once per visit on the published ladder and stops at $50.

How is the travel fee worked out?

By distance, in five bands: $15 under 5 miles, $25 to 12, $35 to 20, $45 to 35 and $50 to 55. Once per visit, never per phone — so a second phone at the same address travels free.

My town isn’t on the list. Do you still come?

If it’s inside 55 miles of Scranton, yes. The list names the places people search for, not the limit of where I go. Find the nearest town on the list, and that’s your band.

Is the travel fee per phone or per visit?

Per visit. If three phones in one house need work, the travel is paid once. Same at a workplace, a campus or a lake house — which is the cheapest way to use me at distance.

Do I pay travel if the repair turns out not to be worth doing?

The diagnosis is free. If a phone isn’t worth repairing I’ll tell you — and I’d rather tell you before I set off than after I arrive, which is why the booking tool asks what’s wrong first.

Why does the fee stop at $50?

Because a fee that keeps climbing while you watch is worse than a slightly higher fixed one. $50 is the ceiling anywhere in the 55 miles — which also means the further out you are, the less you pay per mile.
