The drive you don’t have to make

Clarks Summit sits about eight miles from downtown Scranton — roughly fifteen minutes on a clear day, longer when the Notch is busy or the weather turns. That’s a manageable drive, right up until it’s two of them.

Because that’s what a phone repair usually costs you: down to a shop, hand it over, drive home, wait for the call, drive back. Thirty minutes of actual repair work wrapped in an hour of car.

I do the driving instead. I set up in my vehicle outside your house or your office on State Street, fix it while you get on with your morning, and hand it back before I leave. You don’t go anywhere.

Where I come in the Abingtons

Clarks Summit, Clarks Green, Chinchilla, South Abington, Waverly, Glenburn, Newton, Dalton — if you’re in the Abingtons, you’re inside my normal run. Same price, same day.

And out past the Turnpike interchange toward the Endless Mountains if that’s where you are — ask and I’ll tell you straight whether the travel makes sense.

What I fix

Cracked screens are the most common call, and the cheapest moment to fix one is before the crack reaches the touch layer. Batteries are the repair people put off longest and regret least. Charging ports are the one where the answer is often a $35 clean rather than a repair at all. And back glass costs wildly different amounts depending on which model you’re holding.

Winter is hard on phones up here

The Abingtons sit higher than the valley floor, and if you’ve been out on State Street for the Festival of Ice at the end of January you already know what that feels like.

Cold does two things to a phone. A tired battery that copes fine indoors will drop from forty percent to dead crossing a car park — not because it’s empty, but because a worn cell can’t hold voltage in the cold. And glass that’s already cracked gets brittle, so a hairline you’ve been living with all autumn spreads across the whole screen on the first properly cold morning.

If your phone died on you outdoors this winter and you’ve been assuming it’s just the weather, it’s worth checking the battery health figure. It takes ten seconds and it costs nothing.

Roughly one in five people in Clarks Summit is over sixty-five, and that’s the group most often told to just get a new phone. Usually that’s wrong — a battery or a port is a fraction of the price. I’ll show you the numbers and let you decide.

Questions, answered

Do you come to Clarks Summit?

Yes. Clarks Summit is inside my normal run, along with Clarks Green, Chinchilla, South Abington, Waverly, Glenburn, Newton and Dalton. Travel to Clarks Summit is $25 and the diagnosis is free.

How much is the travel fee to Clarks Summit?

$25. Clarks Summit is about eight miles from downtown Scranton, which puts it in the 5 to 12 mile band. That’s added once per visit, so if more than one phone in the house needs doing you only pay it once.

Can you meet me at work rather than at home?

Yes, and plenty of people prefer it. A workplace car park is often easier than a driveway. I set up in my own vehicle and you carry on with your day until it’s done.

My phone dies fast in the cold. Is that the battery or the weather?

Usually both. Every battery performs worse cold, but a healthy one dips and recovers once it warms up. If yours goes from a decent percentage straight to dead outdoors and won’t come back until it’s charging, the cell is worn. Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging — the Maximum Capacity figure tells you.

How long will you be at my house?

Thirty minutes to an hour for most repairs, and you keep the phone the same visit. Back glass is the exception — the time depends on the model and you’ll get an honest estimate for yours before I start.

What if it turns out not to be worth fixing?

Then I tell you, and the diagnosis still costs you nothing. I may make you a cash offer for the phone instead. I’d rather lose the job than sell you a repair on a phone that isn’t worth it.
