iPhone 11 Pro with the rear glass panel shattered across the whole back

A real one that came in. Back glass shatters into a spiderweb like this because it is a single bonded pane.

Back glass is the repair with the widest price spread of anything I do, and almost none of that is down to me. It's down to how your particular phone was put together. Two people can crack the back of two iPhones a year apart and get very different numbers — so it's worth understanding which one you're holding before anyone quotes you.

Why the model matters more than the crack

On older iPhones, the back glass is bonded to the chassis. There's no panel to unclip. Replacing it means removing the old glass in pieces, clearing every trace of the adhesive underneath, and doing that without disturbing the wireless charging coil or the antenna lines sitting right below it. It's slow work, and plenty of shops skip it entirely and quote you a whole replacement housing instead.

Then Apple changed the design. From the iPhone 14 on standard models, and the 15 Pro onward on Pro models, the back panel became a serviceable part that comes away from the frame. Same crack, same phone in your hand, a fundamentally different job underneath.

That's the single most useful thing to know before you get a price. If you're on one of the newer models, this repair is probably cheaper than you're braced for. If you're on an older one, you deserve to hear why the number is higher rather than just being handed it.

If someone quotes you the same price for back glass across every model without asking which phone you have, they either haven't looked it up or they're pricing for the worst case.

Does it even need fixing?

Honestly — often, no. A cracked back is usually cosmetic. The phone works, the cameras work, and if it doesn't bother you, leaving it is a perfectly reasonable decision. I'd rather say that than sell you a panel.

Four things change that answer:

It's shedding

If glass is lifting at a corner or leaving slivers on your palm, that's not cosmetic any more. It'll find your hand or your pocket eventually.

The back is open

A sealed phone keeps dust and moisture out. A shattered back with gaps in it doesn't. That's a slow problem rather than an urgent one, but it's real — and it's worse if the phone lives in a work bag or a truck.

Wireless charging has got unreliable

The charging coil is inside the phone, not in the glass, so the glass itself isn't the issue. But badly displaced fragments and a case sitting unevenly on top can stop a pad seating properly. If it charges by cable and not on the pad, that's worth a look.

You're selling or trading it in

This is the one where the math usually favors the repair. A cracked back visibly knocks money off a trade-in or a private sale, often more than the panel costs. Worth running the numbers before you list it.

The $115 is a genuine starting point, not bait — it's what an older, simpler phone costs. Newer and larger models cost more, and bonded models cost more again. Put your model into the booking tool and you'll get the actual number rather than a range.

The one repair I won't put a time on

Every other repair has a typical time for your phone, listed on its own page. Back glass I won't put one on, because it isn't the same for every phone.

On a model with a removable panel it's quick. On a bonded model it's the longest job I do, and rushing it is exactly how people end up with adhesive residue under a new panel or a damaged antenna line. If I have the part in stock I come the same day; if not, it arrives next day (three days over a weekend) and I come once it lands. You'll get an honest estimate for your specific model before I start — not a number designed to get me in the door.

Check which glass you actually broke

Worth thirty seconds before you book anything.

The camera lens covers are separate small circles of glass over the camera rings. They crack easily and they look dramatic, but they're a different, much cheaper part than the whole back panel. If your photos have suddenly gone hazy or flared in bright light while the rest of the back looks fine, it's the lens.

Plenty of people book a back glass replacement when a lens cover is the actual problem. Tell me what you're seeing and I'll tell you which one you've got.

3

Tested before I hand it back

Before I hand it back we test wireless charging, MagSafe if your phone has it, and both cameras — the three things this repair can affect if it's done carelessly.

Back glass is the one repair I don’t warranty, and I’ll tell you why. On a lot of phones it is a long teardown, and with travel that is most of my day. I’d rather charge you once, fairly, and be straight about it than build the cost of a return trip into everybody’s price. The glass I fit is the same glass I’d put on my own phone — but once it’s on, it’s on.

Cracked more than the back?

Back glass rarely breaks alone — a drop hard enough to shatter the rear often gets the front too. If both are gone, the screen is usually the one to do first, because that's the one stopping you using the phone.

Either way you only pay travel once when they're done in the same visit, and I'll tell you honestly if doing both is more than the phone is worth.

Questions, answered

How much does back glass replacement cost in Scranton?

From $115, but the spread on this repair is wider than any other because it depends on how your phone was built. Models designed with a removable back panel are at the cheap end. Models where the glass is bonded to the frame cost more because the old glass has to be broken out and cleared away first. Travel is added on distance and the diagnosis is free, so you get the exact number before I come out.

Does cracked back glass actually matter?

Often it's cosmetic, and if it doesn't bother you it's reasonable to leave it. Three things change that answer: glass that's lifting or shedding slivers will cut you, an open back lets moisture and dust reach the inside of the phone, and on models with wireless charging a badly shattered panel can interfere with charging or with MagSafe magnets holding position.

Why is back glass more expensive on some iPhones than others?

Apple changed how the phone is built. On earlier models the back glass is bonded to the chassis, so replacing it means removing the old glass in pieces and clearing the adhesive — slow, and on some models shops replace the entire housing instead. From the iPhone 14 onward on standard models, and the 15 Pro onward on Pro models, the back panel comes off as a serviceable part. Same crack, very different job.

How long does back glass replacement take?

This is the one repair I won't put a single number on. On a model built with a removable back it's quick. On a bonded model it's the longest job I do, because the old glass has to come out cleanly before anything new goes on. If I have the part in stock I come the same day; if not, it arrives next day (three days over a weekend) and I come once it lands. You get the honest time estimate for your specific model before I start.

Is the camera lens the same as the back glass?

No, and it's worth checking which one you've actually broken. The camera lens covers are separate small pieces of glass over the camera rings. Cracking one of those doesn't mean the whole back panel needs replacing, and it's a much cheaper fix. Photos looking hazy or flared in bright light usually points to the lens rather than the panel.

Will wireless charging still work after back glass replacement?

Yes. The wireless charging coil sits inside the phone, not in the glass, so a correctly fitted panel doesn't interfere with it. On MagSafe models the magnet array also stays in the phone. I test wireless charging with you before I hand it back.

Do you really come to me?

Yes. Home, work, or wherever's easiest across Scranton and Lackawanna County. I set up in my vehicle right outside. If you'd rather sit in and watch, you're welcome to.
