The five-minute rules

1. Power it off and keep it off. Every second it runs wet, current is walking across a board it shouldn’t. 2. Do not plug it in — charging a wet phone does more damage than the water did. 3. Skip the rice. It can’t pull moisture out of a sealed phone — even Apple says so now — and it costs you the hours that actually matter.

4. No hair dryer, no radiator, no oven. Heat warps seals and cooks adhesives. 5. Text me. The sooner it’s opened and dried properly, the better the odds — and I come to you, so the clock starts when you message.

What I actually do

I open the phone on the spot, disconnect the battery first, and look at what the water actually touched — board, connectors, cameras, screen layers. Corrosion gets cleaned properly, the phone gets dried the right way, and then we test everything together.

If it needs parts, you get one flat price before anything happens. If it doesn’t need parts, you get your phone back and a story to tell. Either way the diagnosis costs you nothing.

The honest odds

Three things decide them: the liquid (rain and a clean sink are kind; the lake, the pool and the toilet are not), how long it ran wet, and whether it was charged afterwards. Some phones come back at a hundred percent. Some come back as data-rescue missions. Some are done.

I’ll tell you which one you’re holding before you spend anything. That’s not a slogan — it’s the only way I’ll do this work.

If it’s the photos you’re after

Sometimes the phone is done but what’s inside it isn’t — and if the priority is the photos, the messages or the contacts, say that first. It changes what I attempt and in what order. No promises until I’ve seen the board — but data survives water more often than the phone does.

What I fix

Cracked screens — cheapest to fix before the crack reaches the touch layer. Batteries — the repair that makes an older phone feel new for the least money. Charging ports — and if yours only charges at an angle, that’s usually packed lint and a $35 clean rather than a repair at all. Back glass — where the price swings hard depending on which model you’re holding. Met water instead? Read this first.

Questions, answered

Is the rice thing really a myth?

Yes. Rice can’t pull moisture out of a sealed phone — Apple’s own guidance now says not to do it — and the hours a phone spends sitting in rice are the hours corrosion spends eating the board. Off, unplugged, and text me. That’s the playbook.

How fast do I need to act?

Hours matter, days decide. The best outcomes are phones that get opened and dried the same day. I’m on the road 8am to 10pm every day, so same-day is usually possible — text me first, ask questions later.

It went in the lake / the pool / the toilet. Different rules?

Same first moves — off, unplugged, no rice — but dirtier water corrodes faster, so the clock runs harder. Tell me which liquid it was when you text; it changes the odds and I’ll be honest about them.

Can you save my photos?

Often, yes — data survives water more often than the phone does. If the photos are the priority, tell me that first and I’ll work in that order. No promises until I’ve seen the board, but it’s far from hopeless.

My iPhone is supposed to be waterproof. How is it wet?

Water-resistant, not waterproof — and the seals age. A two-year-old phone that’s been dropped a few times doesn’t keep its factory rating. It’s nobody’s fault; it just means the rating on the box had a quieter clock on it than anyone admits.

What if it’s not worth saving?

You hear it straight, and the answer costs nothing. If the smart move is a replacement, I’ll say so — and if the phone’s done but parts of it still have value, I may make you a cash offer for it.
