Six miles, and still not worth the trip

Olyphant sits about six miles northeast of downtown Scranton. That is nothing on a map. It is a different thing entirely once you count what a repair actually costs you in time: drive down, hand the phone over, drive home without it, wait for a call, drive back again.

Thirty minutes of real repair work, wrapped in an hour and a half of car and waiting. And you spend most of that hour without the phone you were trying to get fixed.

I do the driving instead. I set up in my vehicle outside your house or your workplace, fix it while you get on with your day, and hand it back before I leave. You do not go anywhere, and you are never without it.

The whole Mid Valley is one run

Throop, Dickson City, Olyphant, Blakely, Jessup, Archbald — the boroughs sit so close together along the valley that I can pass through four of them in ten minutes. That is why the price is the same across all of them.

It also means that if someone else on your street or in your office needs something looked at, it is the same trip for me — and the travel fee only gets paid once.

What I fix

Cracked screens are the most common call, and the cheapest moment to fix one is before the crack reaches the touch layer. Batteries are the repair people put off longest and regret least. Charging ports are the one where the answer is often a $35 clean rather than a repair at all. And back glass costs wildly different amounts depending on which model you are holding.

iPhone 8 through 17 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy A and S series, Google Pixel. Price is by model, not a flat rate — check yours in the booking tool and you get the real number.

Before you buy a new phone, check the port

The single most common call I get is a phone that has stopped charging, or that only charges if you hold the cable at an angle. Most people assume the port has failed. Most of the time it has not.

What has usually happened is that pocket lint has compacted into the bottom of the port, packed down a little further every time the cable went in, until the connector can no longer seat properly. The port is fine. It is just full.

That is a $35 clean and about ten minutes, not a $75 port replacement — and it is worth trying yourself before you call anyone. Power the phone off and clear it gently with a wooden toothpick. If that fixes it, you have saved the whole job.

If it does not fix it, then it is a genuine port problem and worth looking at properly. Either way you will hear which one it is before you pay anything. I would rather tell you it is a $35 clean than sell you a repair you did not need.

Questions, answered

Do you come to Olyphant?

Yes. Olyphant is inside my normal run, along with Throop, Blakely, Jessup, Archbald and Dickson City. Travel to Olyphant is $25 and the diagnosis is free.

How much is the travel fee to Olyphant?

$25. Olyphant is about six miles northeast of downtown Scranton, which puts it in the 5 to 12 mile band. That is added once per visit, so if more than one phone in the house needs doing you only pay it once.

Do you cover the rest of the Mid Valley?

Yes. Throop, Dickson City, Olyphant, Blakely, Jessup and Archbald are all within a few minutes of each other, so the whole run is one trip for me. Same price across all of them.

Can you meet me at work rather than at home?

Yes, and plenty of people prefer it. A workplace car park is often easier than a driveway. I set up in my own vehicle and you carry on with your day until it’s done.

My phone stopped charging. Does that mean a new port?

Usually not. Nine times out of ten it’s compacted lint in the port from riding in a pocket, and that is a $35 clean rather than a $75 port replacement. I’ll tell you which one it’s before you pay anything.

What if it turns out not to be worth fixing?

Then I tell you, and the diagnosis still costs you nothing. I may make you a cash offer for the phone instead. I ’d rather lose the job than sell you a repair on a phone that isn’t worth it.
